Reference: Core Symptom Differences for Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome and PDD-NOS

To be diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), three core symptoms must be observed: 1) social impairment, 2) communication deficit, and 3) restricted or repetitive routines, interests or behaviors. ASD is a spectrum disorder therefore the severity of the core symptoms will be different for each person but the differences within the spectrum between Autism and Asperger’s is that a person with Asperger’s will have verbal communication skills and be higher functioning in their social interactions. With Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Not Otherwise Specified, a person will have the core symptoms of an autism spectrum disorder but the symptoms will be to a lesser degree.

Social: impaired interaction 

Communication and Language: problems with verbal and nonverbal communication

Routines, Interests, Behaviors: obsessive or repetitive or restricted

Social: impaired interaction but higher functioning compared to autism 

Communication and Language: problems with nonverbal communication (body language, face perception, etc.)

Routines, Interests, Behaviors: obsessive or repetitive or restricted

Social: difficulty relating to people, objects, and events 

Communication and Language: problems with using and understanding language

Routines, Interests, Behaviors: unusual play with toys and other objects; difficulty with changes in routine or familiar surroundings, and repetitive body movements or behavior patterns
