List of Treatments, Therapies and Interventions for Social Impairment that Improve Social Skills

Social impairment is one of three symptoms of an autism spectrum disorder.  Treatments, therapies and interventions that specifically address these social deficits are used as tools to teach and improve social skills.

Direct Teaching of Social Skills

Play Therapy – a child-centered, play-based program that teaches parents how to connect with their children and thereby help their children to learn and grow. This means that parents must give up their thoughts about how the child should be and instead focus on how the child is. Best suited for young children.

DIR (Floortime) – a developmental individualized relationship-oriented (DIR) model (also known as Floortime). The DIR model supports parents as the main play partner of the child.

ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis)/Pivotal Response Training – the approach teaches social, motor, and verbal behaviors as well as reasoning skills. ABA treatment is especially useful in teaching behaviors to children on the autism spectrum who may otherwise not “pick up” these behaviors on their own as other children would. The ABA approach can be used by a parent, counselor, or certified behavior analyst.

Great resources on this page. We also publish social skills books at Windsurf Publishing LLC. Our latest addition is called “Social Skills Practice for the Playground for Children on the Autism Spectrum” by Maureen Mihailescu.

  2. Good site! I actually love how it is easy on my eyes as well as the details are well composed. I am wondering how I could be notified whenever a new post has been made. I have subscribed to your rss feed which really should do the trick! Have a nice day!
